The second “Moving Cinema against FGM” event took place in Mabera (Kuria/Kenya) on 14 November. The team from Tazama and Zinduka showed the film “The Cut” by Beryl Magoko in the “Maranatha FA” church.
About 100 people attended. Most of them stayed after the screening to find out more and discuss the film and FGM openly. Some viewers spoke of their personal experiences. Several people wanted the film to be shown also elsewhere, especially in schools.
As with the first screening, the film was translated live into the local language ‘Kikuria’ by Ben Mokami, a method widely used in East Africa to make foreign language films accessible to those who do not speak English or Swahili.
Here in Mabera, the team members were joined by representatives of the authorities, who told the audience that FGM is a criminal offence in Kenya and that they had recently arrested a circumciser.
On Beryl’s return we will write a more detailed report and send it out as a newsletter.
