Pilot Project Part 2

In September and October we carried out the second part of the pilot project in Kuria (near the Tanzanian border) together with Zinduka Kenya. The timing was deliberate, as the so-called ‘cutting season’ – the time for circumcisions – begins in mid-October.

In this second part, we wanted to find out how useful it is to show the film ‘The Cut’ to girls and young women at risk, and to see how they react to it. We also wanted more parents of these girls and young women to see the film.

In the run-up to the event, Tazama e.V. was repeatedly asked to show the film in schools and to girls and boys. In order not to limit the event to a single school lesson, the Catholic Church in Motemorabu (village) and the Protestant Church in Mabera (small town) offered their premises.

In order to give a first-hand impression of the events, we quote the testimonies of the audience and the observations of some of the team members.

Girls:
Lulu:
“I felt really upset when I saw what was happening to my fellow girls…. Watching a girl get cut in the film, feels like it’s happening to me…”
Neema:
“…Girls shouldn’t choose to get cut because it ruins their lives.“

Rusia Manoti (mother):
This film brought back a lot of memories and filled me with sadness. It was heartbreaking to see the girls being cut… It really upset me. The Kenyan and Tanzanian governments need to work together to stop FGM.”

Team:
Malawa:
“At the screening in Mabera, the atmosphere was really intense as the girls watched the frightening scenes of their peers being cut. …  with some covering their faces. Others sat quietly, clearly absorbed in the film’s story.”
Rose:
“… many of them provided feedback, stating they had learned a lot from the film and wished it could reach more girls in the community.”

Tazama e.V. & Zinduka Kenya want to continue to help.
